Hospitalisation & Day Patients

Our Echunga hospital facility is equipped with stables, yards and small paddocks to cater for both horses dropped off for the day and those requiring overnight stays.

Day patients can include lameness evaluations, medical workups, upper respiratory endoscopy and gastroscopy, dentistry and reproductive procedures, as well as patients requiring non-emergency small surgical procedures.  Examples of surgical procedures performed at the Hills clinic include:

  • Castrations (geldings)
  • Caslicks
  • Standing back surgeries
  • Wound repairs (stitch ups)
  • Mass removal
  • Tooth removal
  • Injection of platelet rich plasma (PRP)

Emergency and complex surgical cases benefit from referral to our Morphettville Equine Clinic for treatment by our equine surgeons.

Endoscopy facilities in hospital include visualisation of the entire upper respiratory tract including the guttural pouch, gastroscopy including the pylorus region, and endoscopy of the urinary and reproductive tracts.

We are equipped to maintain horses on intravenous fluid therapy if required, and have monitoring of the stables available at all times, allowing us to hospitalise medical colics, horses requiring confinement such as severe lamenesses, and ongoing cases requiring daily treatment.  Complex intensive care cases such as very sick foals, possible surgical colics, and colitises (diarrhoea) are best served by referral to our Morphettville Clinic for onsite blood testing, high powered diagnostic equipment, ongoing nursing and access to a surgical theatre facility.
