Internal medicine deals with many common problems not amenable to surgical treatment. These include weight loss, diarrhoea, diseases of the heart, lungs and nervous system, eye problems and infectious diseases. Internal medicine also involves treatment and intensive care of the most critical cases including foals and horses that have had colic surgeries.
The most valuable tool in internal medicine cases is a detailed, accurate history followed by a thorough clinical examination, as often medical problems can be quite subtle and difficult to detect. Occasionally, multiple tests and visits may be required to accurately diagnose your horse's problem, as well as to monitor response to treatment.
We are able to provide a broad range of diagnostics at the Morphettville Equine Clinic. Special procedures utilised include endoscopy (including endoscopy of the respiratory tract, stomach and urinary tract), ECGs (identification of abnormal rhythms of the heart), and procedures to take samples of airway, abdominal and thoracic fluids.
We also care about the day-to-day management of your horse. As such, we provide advice on general management and nutrition to enable you to provide the best possible care for your horse.
